Wular Lake

ashokasays Did you know 223 :

It is difficult to describe in mere words the beguiling beauty of *Wular Lake*. For one, its formidable size - this is one of Asia's largest fresh water lakes and largest in India - for another, it changes character with every few miles. Situated at a distance of about 50km from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, the lake is 10 miles (16 km) long and 6 miles (10 km) wide at an altitude of 1570m. It lies at the north end of the Vale of Kashmir, 20 miles (32 km) north-northwest of Srīnagar. Its area varies from 12 to 100 square miles (30 to 260 square km) according to the season. The lake controls the flow of the Jhelum River, which traverses it. In the north and east, Wular Lake is surrounded by magnificent mountains and dense forests studded with various trees like coniferous pine, apple and walnut adding a sublime touch to the ambience. Terrestrial birds thronging the lake add up to the scenery making the landscape look even more alluring.

In ancient times, Wular Lake was also called Mahapadamsar. Wular Lake plays a significant role in the hydrographic system of the Kashmir Valley by acting as huge absorption basin for annual floodwater. The lake and its surrounding extensive marshes have an important natural wildlife. It is also an important fish resource accounting for about 60% of the total fish production in the state.

INCREDIBLE BHARATHA
