Nohkalikai Waterfalls

#ashokasays Did you know 245:

One of the most photogenic waterfalls in India, Nohkalikai Waterfalls is around 5 km from Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya and is t is the tallest plunge waterfall in India. Falling from a height of 1,100 ft, this fall is a great attraction of Cherrapunjee. The drive to Nohkalikai Falls is through the elevated tableland that leads to the cliff and then hike a short distance to a viewpoint from where you can witness the enchanting sight of the beautiful Nohkalikai waterfall plunging down into an ultramarine pool many hundred feet below. Nohkalikai Falls are fed by the rainwater collected on the summit of comparatively small plateau and decrease in power during the dry season in December - February. The force of water has carved a waterhole/plunge pool which remains blue in the winter and turns green in the summer months. The flow of water is profuse in summer while the flow recedes in the winter to a small stream giving the impression of a white rope against the green forest.
While fog and mist is the main villain in this land, people often have to wait in patience to get a view of this splendid waterfall. The area around the waterfall is thick in greenery and has remained largely untouched. The waterfall is fed by rainwater from a small plateau in the hilltop and as the steam plunges down into a water-pool below, the water looks strangely green.
According to the Khasi legend, the name ‘Nohkalikai’ has been derived after a local woman named 'Likai'- who jumped off the waterfall’s cliff to death.
