Smart Cane

#ashokasays Did you know 237:

India is home to the largest population of visually challenged people in the World (2011 census).
Visually challenged people face fundamental challenges in mobility, education, employment and an independent living, which ultimately impact their inclusion and integration into the society. From visiting a neighborhood grocery store to opening and maintaining bank accounts, every quotidian task is a herculean travail. And usually individuals with blindness commonly use the white cane for independent mobility and its a difficult task as they trip and fall down in many places or even bump into stones, and they will not be able to detect the objects which are at eye level.
To overcome this hurdle, a group of passionate technologists, an IIT professor Rohan Paul and Mr. Dipendra Manocha, Director of Saksham and Delhi-President of National Association of Blind joined hands and came up with an innovative product "Smart Cane" that aims to alleviate the hardships faced by visually challenged people when it comes to independent mobility.

SmartCane is an aid for the visually impaired that provides safe and independent mobility and helps them diagnose any above-the-knee obstruction from a distance of 3 meters without any physical contact.

For the first time, visually impaired have a device that allows them to detect objects in their vicinity without physical contact. Across the trials conducted, SmartCane has been successful in helping the visually impaired not collide with protrusions and has helped them walk around with security and confidence. Frugality and resourcefulness have ensured that this product costs only INR 3,500.

*Rohan Paul* is a robotics researcher and an innovator. A graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, he obtained a D. Phil. at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar from India. His graduate research contributed algorithms for mapping and lifelong learning for mobile robots. After completing his D. Phil., Rohan returned to IIT Delhi and was the founding member of the Assistive Technologies Lab (Assistech), engaged in developing a range of novel cost-effective technologies for mobility, education and independent living for the visually challenged. Rohan is the lead inventor of the SmartCane device for safe mobility that has impacted over 10,000 users in India and 8 other countries. Presently, he is a Postdoctoral Associate at the Robust Robotics Group at CSAIL, MIT. His research involves probabilistic models to understand natural language and high-level tasks for robots in factories and homes.
