From No Electricity to WiFi and CCTV: How One Man Transformed This Gujarat Village
Punsari village, barely 100 km from Ahmedabad, could be a textbook case of development. Closed-circuit cameras, water purifying plants, air-conditioned schools, Wi-Fi, biometric machines - the village has it all. And all of it was done in a matter of eight years, at a cost of a mere Rs 16 crore.
The man behind the transformation is its young sarpanch - 31-year-old Himanshu Patel. A graduate from North Gujarat University, Mr Patel had won the panchayat polls in 2006, at the age of 23.
Today he stands with the following achievements
-Schools are airconditioned, equipped with CCTV cameras and digital technology is used to impart education.
-There is a 66 KV sub-station that supplies power to the village.
-The villagers are given accidental cover of Rs 1,00,000 and medi-claim cover of up to Rs 25,000.
-A 20-litre can of clean drinking water can be availed for just Rs4!
-All the people of the village are provided with a 24 hour Wi-Fi facility.!
-Mini-buses are used for transport purpose within the village. The panchayat has started a bus facility called the Atal Express for women which is used for the import of milk
