Brave Heart Sunitha Krishnan

#ashokasays Did you know 165:

Sunitha Krishnan was gang-raped when she was 15. Krishnan has had to deal with all that and more. She is one of the many in India who know what it is to be subjected to a vicious rape in India, where victims face stigma, isolation and social ostracism, apart from the trauma.

But the difference with Krishnan is that Today, she runs an organisation that works for the care and rehabilitation of trafficked women. 'Prajwala' was established by Krishnan in 1996 and since then, she has rescued at least 8000 girls and women. The journey began by converting a brothel in Hyderabad into a school for the children of sex workers.

Since then, she has braved threats and physical assaults - one particular attack left her with an irreparably damaged ear - but an undaunted Krishnan has managed to rescue some 8,000 girls. Those rescued are rehabilitated through vocational training, jobs and marriage.

Despite attacks on her, Sunitha Krishnan stands firmly for the cause. Krishnan hopes to, one day, be able to stigmatise rapists and stop victim shaming in the country.

A short lady (140cm), Krishnan today is perhaps one of the tallest figures of hope in contemporary India.
