LAKE CHILKA

Lake Chilika, is Asia's biggest salt water lake in the eastern coast state of Orissa. Located at about 100km from Bubaneshwar, the Chilika lake has a long history spanning over 5000 years. The surface area of this lake is around 1100 sq.km. 35 rivers and streams drain into the lake. 
Chilika lake is a hot spot for Bio diversity and shelters a number of endangered species listed in the ICUN red list of threatened species. The lagoon is the wintering ground for more than a million migratory birds. It is the largest wintering ground for migratory birds in Indian subcontinent. The lagoon hosts over 160 species of birds in the peak season (October to December). Birds from as far as the Caspian Sea, Aral Sea, Lake Baikal and other remote parts of Russia, Kirghiz steppes of Mangolia, Central and South east Asia, Ladakh and Himalayas migrate here, some of them probably follow very long routes and fly almost 12000 kms to reach Chilika Lake.
