The Colorful Sankheda Furniture

#ashokasays Did you know 273:

In India, there are many areas where wooden handicraft works has been done traditionally since last many centuries. But the handicrafts of Sankheda (Gujarat) has a unique identity among these all.
Sankheda furniture
is colorful teak wood furniture of Gujarat, treated with lacquer and painted in traditional bright shades of maroon and gold. It is made in Sankheda village and hence its name. The village is located about 45 kilometers from Vadodara.

Lacquered turned wood furniture with hand painted motifs and traditional method of ornamentation, popularly known as Sankheda furniture, is thought to have been produced since 17th Century. In this town, about 80-100 families belonging to the “Kharadi-Suthar”community are involved in this craft, giving them a strong sense of community identity and continuity.

A local legend narrated to the origin of this craft form is that a spiritually oriented person, to avoid Mughal invaders, came to Sankheda and stayed in a hut with a wood cutter who looked after him. After staying with him for a long period he suddenly disappeared. However, the night he vanished from the village, the wood cutter saw him in his dream and the sagely person blessed him with skills of craftsmanship in carpentry. The wood cutter then became a carpenter and started carving furniture using lacquer coating

The craft is greatly respected in the region as the processes involved are close to nature and it uses Lac, a material known to man from very early times. Lac or shellac, a material available abundantly in nature, is a natural resin, produced as a result of the secretion of crimson-red tiny insects which thrive on certain trees. The ‘Palas’, or in Sanskrit, ‘Lakshataru’, or the Lac tree has been mentioned in the ‘Vedas’Apart from traditional furniture in a wide range of three piece settees, headboards, beds, garden swings, dressing tables, rocking chairs, tables, screens, divan, etc, other handicraft innovations introduced in this format are wall-hangings, pedestal lamps, flower vases and pen stands, toys, kitchen ware and support for hammocks. Though the design appears fragile, the furniture is durable and lasts for a long period. It is a custom among the Gujarati community to gift this traditional furniture as an auspicious gift during marriage.

The fame of which has now spread not only in Gujarat and India but all over the world. This furniture is object of pride at Buckingham Palace, U.K., White House at Washington, U.S.A. and President House of Russia. as well.
