Mustard (TamDil) Lake

#ashokasays Did you know 297:

In many cities the many lakes are not kept clean and unfortunately the first picture we get when we think of a lake is the one filled with weeds and a dirty smell in some areas. But that's a case mostly in a city where a lake is not maintained. But there are some beautiful and serine lakes all over the country. They surroundings offer some amazing views all around. You have seen some in a few posts which I had put up earlier.
Tam Dil Lake is a small reservoir lake situated about 64 km from Aizwal, the capital of Mizoram. Literally Tam Dil lake means "Mustard(Tam) Lake(Dil)" in the mizo language.
Tam dil Lake offers an ideal place to be in the lap of nature. Nature always has a healing touch and a reclusive spot like this - away from the crowd and yet easily accessible by road - is an ideal place to be for any traveled.

The origin and etymology of Ṭam Dil are shrouded in myth. Folklore has it that a married couple had a jhum plot in this small valley surrounded by small steep hills. The man unfortunately died leaving the wife to care for the crops alone. In the middle of the field was a robust mustard plant, conspicuously bigger than any other plants. One night the widow has a visitation by her husband, who informed her to take special care of the giant mustard plant as it was a harbinger of immense blessing. On the wake, she did as told, and the plant thrived very well. As time went, the widow remarried but the new husband objected to any thing reminiscence of the deceased husband, and so he plucked the plant up by the roots and discarded it. The vast hole left in the ground was then soon filled by water (seeping from the plant, according to some versions; from the ground itself, in another version) to become an exquisite lake. Hence the name of Ṭam Dil, for the "lake of the mustard".

Tam dil wetland covers an area of more than 300 sq kms and covers a lot of thick vegetation around the lake. The lake has plenty of fish and prawns in it. The lake is not only a tourist resort and a picnic spot but also a gem for the fishery and forest department. The tourist resort run by the Mizoram Tourism department is right on the shore of the lake with the fishery department on one side. The lodge overlooks the lake. It is a perfect place to refresh one's mind.

The lake is small but the picturesque and vibrant forest surrounding it, makes this place a feast for your eyes. The forest encircling the lake is known for various animal and bird species including deer, wild pig and bear. A quiet walk along the shore of the lake watching the reflection of the trees specially at the sunset or even having breakfast or lunch by the side of the lake can surely make you get lost in the beauty of nature.
INCREDIBLE BHARATHA
