India's Largest Earthen Dam

#ashokasays Did you know 293:

India has constructed a lot of Engineering projects across the country. Engineering has been across the industry, be it construction, manufacturing, science, medicine etc. Construction industry is the second highest employer across after agriculture.
There are innumerable number of dams built across the country and each one offers a splendid view and displays engineering skills India has. Banasura Sagar Dam is one of them. The Banasura Sagar Dam is named after Banasura, the son of Mahabali who was a very respected king of Kerala.

The Banasura Sagar Dam constructed in 1979, is located 21 km from Kalpetta, in Wayanad District of Kerala in the Western Ghats. The Banasura Sagar dam, a kilometer long earth structure is the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia. It impounds the waters of the Karamanathodu, a tributary of the Kabini river.

The reservoir formed by the dam is dotted with tiny islands enveloped in thick foliage, and with the Banasura hill in the background, offers a magnificent view. At an altitude of 3200 feet in the mist-clad hills of Wayanad, Banasura is an ideal retreat for the traveler who looks for a more enriching experience than a mere vacation. Located in the midst of lovely, mist-clad hills with a wildlife sanctuary and park full of flowering trees, this spot of enchantment has no parallel elsewhere. With its placid crystal clear waters Banasura is a wonderful picnic spot.

INCREDIBLE BHARATHA
