#ashokasays Did you know 311:
After the 1946 election for the Congress presidency (who would have been the PM of the country), Sardar Patel’s name was proposed by 13 states representatives out of 16. Just a few days, before the all important election, Mahatma Gandhi request Sardar Patel to leave the candidacy and support Jawaharlal Nehru. Sardar Patel, without pondering twice, stepped down. While this is true, we cannot also deny the fact that it was Sardar Patel who had great dreams for India after its Independence and had he been the PM, India would have been in a different world: possibly a better and a prosperous one.
*Integrating India*: At the time of independence, Indian territory was divided into three parts. First, the territories under the direct control of the British government, second were the territories over which the hereditary rulers had suzerainty. The regions, which had been colonized by France and Portugal, formed the last. India, without the integration of these different territories under one roof, could not be considered as a unified and total country. It was a stupendous task for the ruling party, to persuade the rulers of these states to join. According to British government, the province rulers had the liberty to choose how they wanted to be ruled. They were given two choices. They could join either of India and Pakistan or stay independently. The stance of the British government had made the task much difficult for India. At this point many leaders approached the rulers but failed to convince. When our country became independent in 1947, Sardar Patel was appointed as the deputy prime minister for home ministry of the country. Since day one, he had a vision for India to consolidate it into one united country. As the first Home Minister of Independent India, he played an important role in bringing the 555 self-governing princely states and territories into the Indian federation. To the astonishment of his critics and fellow politicians, almost within a year, he drew a new map of India with every princely State being a part of the Indian union and thus, paved the way for cultural unity and harmony. The state of India we see today was a result of the efforts put in by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
*Civil services in Independent India*: According to many, the actual acknowledgement for formation of the Indian Civil Service in free India goes to Sardar Patel. The Indian Civil Service, formed by the British Government was to protect and strengthen their rule in India. Sarder Patel, on the other hand, wanted a strong and independent civil service. He had put his support for a Federal Civil Service. The Civil Service established in Democratic India should serve the people of India. His argument led to form a groundwork for Unified National Administration. And today, we do have the Indian Administrative Service, the Indian Police Service, and the Indian Forest Service for the people.
